Fiber Tuesday: Christmas String Art

I tend to knit in spurts. I’ll get obsessed and can’t stop myself for months on end. Then for a few more months I completely forget it. It’s like I have amnesia and someone tells me that I knit but have no idea what they are talking about. Then one day when I’m washing dishes with a knitted dish cloth, if I stare at it long enough I remember knitting it. It’s a strange feeling.

I am now in one of those knitting amnesia periods. No time to try and recover my memories now though, I have plenty of craft projects to keep me busy. And this one is a great way to use up those yarn scraps you don’t know what else to do with.

I have a hard time throwing out Christmas cards whether they have pictures on them or not. Maybe it’s because I love Christmas so much. I finally found a new purpose for some of those old Christmas cards. If you’ve sent me one without pictures, zoom in on the picture above. You may see the one you sent.

I started off with the cards. I cut them up and arranged them in a collage. Next I Mod Podged the heck out of them. Something I learned the hard way is that glitter makes the Mod Podge not want to stick, and Christmas cards are covered in glitter. If you use enough, it does eventually stick, but just be aware.

Next I got some copper finish upholstery nails and made an outline of some trees. There is no rhyme or reason to how I wrapped the string between the nails. I just tried to cover it evenly. I did a thin green string inside the trees and outlined in black. After several wraps pulling on the nails, some of the nails did pop out. I caught them quickly though, so I didn’t have to go back and redo it.

It was a fun and relatively quick project. I may try another string art project but with some scrap yarn next time.

I love writing and knitting. I am a work from home accountant, and I'm learning to be a Christmas tree farmer with my husband and two children.
