I’ve been so excited about planting this year and it’s just not time yet. In the meantime I found a garden related project to keep me busy. I mentioned in my last Fiber post that Mia always thinks anything on my needles is a present for her, so this one is for her. It’s a gathering apron for her to wear this summer to collect vegetables, blackberries, or rocks if that is what she is collecting that day. This might even come in handy this weekend during an Easter egg hunt.
I’m not posting this exact pattern simply because I winged it and it didn’t work out so well. I intended to make a big rectangle and then sew up the sides to make a pouch, but somehow on the stitch pattern I used for the netting section, instead of making a rectangle, I added a stitch on one side and decreased it on the other for each row. I ended up with a trapezoid that resembled the state of Tennessee. I made some adjustments when sewing and was able to salvage it.
I’ll explain my thought process and you can probably come up with your own pattern that will work better than my first try. I used a cotton yarn because it’s summery and because it’s washable. I made a rectangle that is solid stockinette stitch on the back to protect clothing in case she does use this for blackberries, and an open stitch for the front to allow air flow. I folded the rectangle in half and sewed up the sides, then I sewed on a ribbon to tie it around the waist.
Mia loves it, so that makes me happy even though I made some mistakes. I’m going to try and make myself one and hopefully will learn from the mistakes I made the first try. Life lesson: there is no such thing as wasted yarn, just adjust your plan.
